In the recent weeks, we’ve had the privilege to connect with some of the Miami’s finest artists, creatives, entrepreneurs and rabble rousers and we can’t begin to express how impressed we are with our city’s incredibly deep talent pool. Check out inspiring stories from Kendall below.” – VOYAGE MIA
Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Rodriguez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I remember my grandfather and father always taking pictures.
One of my favorite things to do was to look through our family albums and revisit those memories and hear the stories behind them.
Naturally, photography became one of my favorite hobbies. I remember the excitement of running to go develop film. But it wasn’t until after my husband and I started our own family that my love for photography deepened.
Our first son inspired me to tell stories through imagery. So during this time, I captured pretty much his every waking moment, smile, and milestone.
Tragically, at two and half years old our world was turned upside down, and he passed away. It all happened very quickly and unexpectedly. My world completely changed. Suddenly all those images became invaluable. I knew I could allow this tragedy to defeat me, or I could choose to celebrate his life. In honor of him, I chose the latter.
I started to gift sessions to families and little by little my passion started to become something I knew I could turn into a career. From there my business grew to focus on love stories and weddings while still including all celebrations of life and that’s where I am at today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely has not always been smooth. Like every business, there are seasons that have lulls. I’ve had to learn quickly where to build and prepare for when those lulls hit. Another challenge that I had to learn was to not allow myself to fall into judging or measuring my success through other people’s successes.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a Wedding & Lifestyle Portrait photographer, but I prefer to say I am a photographer of love + adventure! I love to travel, obsessed with everything Disney, soaring through the clouds is my happy place, and coffee is my love language.
From the moment a potential client reaches out, I strive to get to know who they are so I can tell their story. I love to capture my clients in their element- be it their home, or favorite park, or bistro. I always want a session to feel less like a photoshoot and more like a date…spending a day together doing what you love with the people you love. I’d like to say that’s what I’m known for, capturing those raw and real moments. Though I focus a lot on weddings, my heart is still in photographing and celebrating every milestone life gifts us thereafter.
Though I do not make it public, throughout the year. I gift sessions to families whose children have terminal illnesses in honor of my son. For every city I visit, I seek out a couple or family who may not have the resources to invest in custom photography and gift a session. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given to grow and to be able to travel and do what I love, so when I can, I choose to give it right back.
At the end of the day, my heart and the heart of my business is in loving and serving people well. I focus on capturing and celebrating both the loud joyous occasions as well as the still quiet moments. My goal is for my clients to walk away from their session experience feeling excited, loved, celebrated, and with images that will remind them of all those precious in-between moments!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! Start where you are. Miami alone has a population of 2.7+ million people! By all means, there is enough business for everyone. My recommendation to someone just starting their company here is to find a community to help them navigate through that first year, a mentor who can help guide them, & a peer who they can together walk alongside, uplift, and support each other.
